Jeff Long will be at Willard Mt. in Easton on Thursday. He'll happily meet any JV who would like to ski with him. 6:00 lift, 2 people for $30.00.

This week's JV race is SL again. We'll be n the Arena again. Race start 9:30 or as close as we can make it.

So,
Sunday dawned chilly but the conditions were perfect for our JV World Cup SL. We had roughly 50 racers who twisted and turned down the course twice each. Some were more successful in making all the gates than others and consistency won out over those who were skiing on the edge if you will. A good lesson for our young racers: you need both, dynamism and control to be successful in this sport!

Below please find results from yesterday's race. We will be doing a bit more SL training this coming weekend and our next race will be SL as well. We'll return to GS mode in anticipation of the Kandahar in late February.

A successful first race! Challenging terrain for us but the kids skied really well and most stayed warm despite the gusty, cold weather. Results posted below. Congrats to all of our competitors.

Training this weekend will proceed as such: free ski Saturday PM, awards at 2:15. Sunday free skiing in groups. We'll need to condense some due to the fact a few of our coaches are taking a USSA coaching clinic. No program Monday. Have fun, free ski with your family and stay warm!

Lift Safety

Please encourage your kids to always put the safety bar down when they are riding the lifts not only at Gore but everywhere they ski. So far this ski season, 2 racers have been gravely injured and lost their lives due to lift riding accidents. (One in California and one in Massachusetts.) The coaches do everything we can to assure that kids are riding lifts safely however, support from the parents in this area will make a big difference.

Hovey Info

Hi JV parents. THis weekend a few of our racers will be competing in the historic Hovey race at Whiteface. The rest of our racers will be training at Gore. For those traveling to the Hovey, please meet Jeff Long at the fireplace in the main lodge at 8:30 am. Be sure to take a few runs away from the race course and enjoy the terrain that Whiteface has to offer.

Training at Gore will continue as usual. Please be aware that program starts at 8:30 am sharp!.

Last Friday we conducted baseline skills testing. We will use these evaluations to shape our training throughout the season and will be reevaluating later in the season with the goal of measuring for growth in skiing skills. Remember while the races are fun, our goal as a program is to create good fundamentally skilled skiers who can be successful later in their racing careers due to the good base they were given at the V's level.

Christmas Week Training 2011

Kandahar and Next Weekend

Hi all,

Thanks for everyone's patience during the past Kandahar weekend and over the break. Training was pretty successful and the snow gods were kind to us on Friday as we skied in lots of nice light, fresh powder. Nothing helps balance a skier more than powder so it was a welcome teaching tool that mother nature bestowed upon us. This past weekend's races were long and the coaches and race crew worked tirelessly to combat the bounty that was dropped from the sky. We saw some great skiing and hope everyone who competed had a good time and learned a lot.

Congrats to those who qualified for the Kandahar Champs next weekend at Holiday Valley. Gore will be well represented at the JV level by the following athletes: Hannah Petro, Calynn Cerniglia, Pilar Galvin, Quinn Taylor, Nolan Dils and Nick Fraterrigo. We wish all of them good luck next Sunday!

This coming weekend we'll take a step back from racing, hope for nice weather and enjoy what Gore has to offer in the Spring. Coaches will meet groups as usual in front of the Training Center at 8:30. Matt P's group will go with Demetria. We'll be holding tryouts this weekend as well for kids hoping to join the program next season. If you have a child who would like to give it a shot, this is the weekend to have them ski with us!

On another note, we will be having a retirement celebration for Joan McCarthy as she ends her 40 plus years of teaching skiing at Gore, after the SG on March 12th. Starting next weekend there will be a framed picture and a book of memories and well wishes in the back room of the Training Center. If you would like to sign the book or picture, please go ahead and do so. If you have a particular Joan story you would like to share, please email me, Jess Connelly at jecupstate@gmail.com. Joan has been an institution at Gore and we'd like to send her off with something to commemorate her years of teaching kids and all of us to be great skiers.

So, after a few delays due to iced in lifts, out third world cup went off without a hitch. Please see below for the results. On another note, our focus next weekend will be back to basics. Lots of free skiing and drill work to make sure those fundamental skills are in place. As far as Presidents Week is concerned, I am awaiting an executive decision from Bone as to what we'll do with training. We have an extreme coach shortage so please be patient as we work out the scheduling issues.

Hi All,
Please see previous post about the skiing on the tails issues. We will be training some more SL this weekend in anticipation of our race on February 6th. Saturday will be a SL morning followed by guided free skiing in the PM. Sunday will continue our work on fundamentals. Please note, the following weekend's race will be on the Arena again. With that said, please allow us time to compile results before the awards begin. We are well aware that it is Super Bowl Sunday and will do everything we can to facilitate a speedy race but complications may occur. Your patience is appreciated.

New Training Center Policy

Dear Parents

We are starting a new policy here at NYSEF,we will no longer allow our athletes to tuck sitting on the tails of their skis. This is a very dangerous position to be in and risks great injury to young athletes. Any time the buttocks are below the knee the risk of injury is magnified. This position is not used in ski racing nor in recreational skiing.

The new policy will be that if any NYSEF coach witnesses any NYSEF athlete skiing in this position the athlete's pass will be pulled immediately for the remainder of the day. This will be in effect anytime the athletes are skiing at Gore or with a NYSEF coach at another venue. This will also be in effect on race days. If we witness an athlete doing this before their 1st run they will be pulled from the race with no refund.

We have been talking about this to athletes informally for years but it seems to have not taken hold; thus our new approach. We will go over this new rule with our J5 athletes again this Saturday.

Our next world cup will be February 6th. It will be a SL on the same trail as the JIII's will be using Twister for their SG training camp. After that, we'll move back into GS mode to prepare for the Kandahar and the famous JV speed event in March.

Martin Luther King Weekend plan

Hi all,
Just a quick update to the JV schedule for this weekend. Training tomorrow will commence at 8:30. We'll be training a little stubbie gate SL in the morning and then working on technique. Sunday we'll be racing SL. Race will begin at 9:30 sharp and the course will be on the Arena. Awards will follow after lunch. Please give us some time to calculate results since we'll have to enter everything into the computer by hand this time due to the location of the race. We'll also only be able to run one competitor at a time on the course so please be patient and help your racer to make it back to the start on time.

There will be no training on Monday for the JV's. Many coaches have to work at the "real jobs" and we won't have enough coaches for every group. Enjoy the day, ski with your kids or have them rest a bit.

JV World Cup #1

Well, our first World Cup was a smashing success. The mountain held up just enough for us to complete the race and the conditions on the course were perfect! Below please find the results from our first race. This weekend kids will be free skiing working on fundamentals within their groups. A few of our college helpers will be with us still (we love their help and enthusiasm) so please thank them for their efforts over the break. They had a lot of fun skiing with the kids. JV's traveling to the Hovey at Whiteface, look for Tom Maguire in the base lodge. He'll be there to cover the JIV's and V's. If you can;t find him, grab a NYSEF coat and have them radio him to find his whereabouts.

Keep Hannah Petro in your thoughts. After an innocent looking tumble on Lies last week, Hannah came up with a broken arm. She's suffering some and could use some well wishes from friends at Gore.

Hi everyone,

Great start to the year. We had a lot of kids today and experienced some great skiing. It's all about mileage and fundamentals right now.

Please see the calendar for the JV race calendar for 2011. Our first World Cup is Jan 2. We will be holding race training through x-mas week starting on Dec. 26th continuing through our annual 1/2 day on Dec. 31st.

There will be a JV parent meeting Sunday December 19 at 9:30 in the back room of the NYSEF building.

Please see the info below for a great opportunity for the kids to ski and meet US Olympians.

Subject: Lift Mt Pisgah

Looks like it is a go for the US Ski team to send over some athletes to Mt. Pisgah to ski and hang with the kids on Friday March 19th. We are using this opportunity to make a little money for the Lift Mt. Pisgah project. Thought you would want to know so you can help us spread the word. It is $15.00 per person plus a lift ticket if they want to ski with the athletes. This is all weather dependent. They have said that Ted Ligety, Jimmy Cochran, Stacey Cook and Alice McKennis (all 2010 Olympians) have said they're in to ski with the kids on Friday. Andrew Weibrecht said he will be there as well. Hope you can send up some Gore kids to help us out maybe. We just found out so you may get something from NYSEF tomorrow on this. We are also having a cocktail party with the athletes on Sunday night at the Fireside as well for the Lift Mt. Pisgah project.

The Kandahar is quickly approaching and we are still in need of volunteers to work the race. Please be sure to register online

Please be sure your child is registered and dressed to go out with the coaches by 8:00 AM both days next weekend. There are several racers since this is a III, IV and V race and we'll be shooting for an early start. Several coaches will be on the hill helping with the race so there will be 3 V's coaches per day inspecting and getting the V's racers ready at the start. Look for them before your send the kids up.

Again, please give the JV calendar a view so you can see the schedule for the remainder of the season. We are really encouraging people to go to Whiteface on the weekend of the 20th and 21st of March to see our US Olympians race in the National Championships.

Hi everyone,

It's that time of the season. Everyone is busy and all groups are heading into the qualification time. On the JV front, we have our next SL race on February 13th. There will be training M-W during presidents week with days off on Thursday and Friday. Please let your coaches know when and if you'll be joining us during the break.

We have reached the time to do our mid-season evaluations. JV coaches are planning on meeting as a group this weekend to re-sort groups. Please remember, groups are organized by skill set. Depending on which skills we are working on at a particular time, your child may shift groups. Movement from group to group is neither punitive nor permanent.

JV World Cup 1 Results

World cup #1 was held yesterday Saturday Jan. 2nd. After a slight timing delay the race was underway finished successfully with only one near disaster. Thankfully Nolan is fine and landed in a huge puff of snow after missing 2 large trees and a snow making pipe.

Below see the results from yesterday's race. Our next race will be a slalom on January 16th location TBA.

JV World Cup Race 1

Happy New Year all!

Our first World Cup race will be held Saturday January 2nd. It will be a GS on Otter Slide. Our goal is to start at 9:30 on the dot. Kids will have 2 runs and awards will follow at 12:30. After awards, kids will go back out with their respective groups and parents are invited to join us in the Training Center for a tuning clinic with Gary Higley owner of the Sports Page ski shop in Glens Falls.

Hi Everyone. What a great (but delayed) start to the racing season! We're in the midst of the second weekend of JV training and the kids and coaches are smiling. Conditions are good and everyone seems to be really excited for the upcoming holiday break to begin so we can ski even more.

With that said, the mountain has approved our JV World Cup schedule for 2010. Please see below:

March 7- JV Speed Event

All dates are final and disciplines and location of races are subject to mountain approval. We are shooting for 2 GS and 2 SL world cup races this season in addition to our annual speed event.

The Kandahar is also being held at Gore this winter and will take place on February 27th and 28th. The Kandahar for those who don't know is an old race (older than me since I competed in it as a V and it was old then) that V's are invited to participate in and can lead to qualification to the Piche Invitational held at Gunstock NH March 19th and 20th.

There will be JV program each day over the holiday break starting on December 26th. December 31st will be a half day so that families and coaches can celebrate the New Year.
